Skype and their Violations

July 26th, 2007 by Jon

I like using Skype as it is better than other free voice/video communication. If you have not tried it yet, it will give you a better response comparing it to Yahoo Messenger in the same Internet Connection bandwidth rate.

Too bad that they’re in trouble as they’re found violating GNU General Public License (GPL). Read the full article from Yahoo News!

“Basketball Is Weird”

July 24th, 2007 by Jon

I just wonder and maybe you can help me answer the question.

We were having a lunch out in a steakhouse with some TV monitor around us showing sports news. In the middle of conversation, my White Canadian colleague uttered, “I find basketball weird”, and as the TV flashes Lebron James.

I am about to defend the game as I am fanatic but felt it’s useless and will only consume my energy. Hockey is the game they love here in Canada. I never played hockey, never liked it, and did not spend more than 10 minutes watching it but never felt it’s weird. Nor the game of Sepak Takraw

I wonder what was he thinking and why is it weird in his eyes? Could it be because a black guy was flashed and blacks are normally the dominant player in NBA? Was it because in basketball, players wear shorts and sleeveless shirts, while hockey players are covered from head to toe? Or because it is more normal to him play around things with a stick than with a bear hand?

Is the game weird or he’s weird? :)
James Naismith, the inventor of basketball is a Canadian, born, grew, and studied in Canada. NBA’s Most Valuable Player in season 2005 and 2006 is Steve Nash, which is a Canadian. NBA.com is the third most visited sports website according to alexa.com while NHL.com is on 28th spot.

Well, this post started with questions in mind ended up ranting. :) I just felt it is better to write it down.

Know The Reasons Why Employee Hate Their Managers And Quit

July 23rd, 2007 by Jon

Do you know why employees leave the company? Even with good salary and compensation? Listen up employers and managers. Bruce L. Katcher and Adam Synder published 30 Reasons Employees Hate Their Managers – What Your People May Be Thinking and What You Can Do About It.

Being an employee and an employer myself, I will attest that these 30 reasons mentioned in the book are all true but I will only highlight some of them here.51bgxvdwnl_aa240_.jpg

In chapter 4, the title is, “Nobody Appreciates My Hard Work”. Every employee should feel appreciated in small or big things they’ve done. Who in the world doesn’t want to be appreciated anyway? In work, home, and even team play, people are looking for to be acknowledged. You wouldn’t imagine the impact to them even simple note like, “Nice design colors”, “Great job mom”, “Nice post”(for bloggers) or “That’s a nice pass” (if you’re playing basketball.) Just be careful though to sound like you’re faking it. They’ll know it too. Believe me.

“Management Doesn’t Listen To Employees”. What’s the feeling of being ignored? How can employees trust the judgment of management when their good suggestions are ignored?

“There Are Too Many Damn Meetings“. This is something I really, really, hate. Many managers thought that activity means productivity and having many meetings means clear direction. I tell you that people usually wander especially if it’s a long one.

“It’s Just Not Right that We All Receive the Same Pay”. I worked with company that the salary is based on level. If we’re on the same level means we have same pay. If you work harder and I slack most of the time, don’t you think it’s unfair? One reason why companies do this is they’re lazy to accurately measure performance.

Overall, I think lack of leadership skills is the root cause of this. There’s so many people in senior level position doesn’t know how to lead.

You Manage Things and You Lead People.

What’s your take on this?

How Much Is Your Net Worth?

July 18th, 2007 by Jon

Every one of us has this dream to be financially wealthy. The definition of wealth may vary of course to a person. In anyway, before you start your journey towards your financial goal, you should know where you at so as to realize how far or near you’re from your these goals.

It is a good exercise to have at least once a year assessment of your net worth to see if you’re actually progressing or not. This simplified exercise may reveal a lot of things about your finances.

Go get it and see for yourself. Click here to Download this Statement of Assets and Liabilities template (microsoft excel file) I personally use.

Post a comment if you have questions filling up.

P.S. The content of the template is not my actual information. It is only a guide to help you out.

Is Blog a Potential Source of Passive Income?

July 16th, 2007 by Jon

Back in 2003, I was introduced to passive and active income through the book of Robert Kiyosaki’s, Rich Dad Poor Dad. This made me realize what kind of life I want to be and , I have been hunting for potential passive income since then.

Fast forward to 2005, my buddy Sherwin Baluyot, mentioned Google adsense as potential passive income through website publishing. I installed one in a forum that I maintan. Since I was busy putting up my retail business, I did not care much about adsense income really. A year after, I received a $100 payment from Google. It’s really a small amount of money but a legitimate passive income.

So I contemplate and alter my plans as I migrated to Canada. I did browse a lot about adsense, adwords, blogs, e-book publishing, and online affiliate marketing. Above all these, Blogs or Website publishing got my interest because I have skills necessary to develop a website.

I did launched 3 websites and giving me more than $100 a month of passive income now. Again, it is a small amount but the initial development is the only work I have done.

I veered away in Blogging as source of passive income because blogs usually associate itself to the author. That means, I have to write my own posts most of the time that makes it an active income. Well, these are what I have seen with most of the blogs.

Yugatech is my favorite Filipino blog and the author Abe Olandres is making good money from his blog. His site is identified with him. To keep his readers satisfied, he has to write at least once a day and making it as an active income. Yugatech blog is Abe. The popularity of his blog made him popular too and landed as an endorser (now, this is passive) of Ad Auction.

One solution I know of is to create a blog with other writers posting that no single author will be identified with it. Abe does have one with Pinoy Tech Blog.

Are there other ways that you know to make a blog a source of passive income? I am willing to partner and invest if you have a sound idea.

10 Ways to Get More Done in Less Time!

July 5th, 2007 by Jon

There a lot of ways to increase your productivity and you probably have read or heard most of them. Time is gold. If some did not work for you, you may try these 10 more ways.

1. Quit Using Sticky Notes. I am impressed with how “Post It” was accidentally discovered, but I still like using regular notebooks to write down schedule, ideas, to dos, etc. Sticky notes tend to get lost. Though it looks good if your boss sees those sticky notes around your monitor and knows you’re working. 

2. Archiving and deleting computer files. Initially, you may want to put computer files that you’ve not accessed in last 90 days in an archive folder. Then delete them if you’ve not touched in the last 6 months. It is very unlikely that you will need them again.

3. Don’t constantly check your emails. This is something really difficult for people whose jobs are always in front of computer and online. Mostly, twice daily is enough.

4. Update your address book. For people who frequently send emails, this is a definite time saver. Re-typing email is waste of time.

5. Write your thoughts, modify later. When composing an email message, it is more efficient if you right your thoughts first and modify it later for clarity and typo error corrections. Resist the temptation. I guess writers or bloggers can relate to this. (I just did it while writing this post.)

6. Listen to audio books. Listening than reading a printed book is really a time saver. You can listen while crossing the streets, driving, or on a treadmill. You can’t do that if you’re holding a book on one hand (without risking your life.) When I am on commute, my travel time is about an hour a day which I spend on audio books. So, I don’t need to allot an hour to exclusively read a book.

7. Send a text message instead of calling. Assuming the message you want to send across is simple and you don’t want to engage in unnecessary conversation on mobile phone, just send a text message. You save few minutes not just your time and also his/her time.

8. Pay your bills electronically. You can save at least half the time when paying monthly bills.

9. Know thy short-cut keys. You can save a lot of time if you know short-cut keys in playing around with your computer (isn’t this is what short-cut keys for?). Imagine the world without CTRL-C or CTRL-V. If you use particular software like spreadsheet, you’ll do things faster than average users.. Also, some keyboards have this quick launch buttons to help you out. Use them. Maximize them.

10. Tape your favorite shows. Watch them at your convenience time where more important things has been done. Fast forwarding through commercial will save you at least 10 minutes an hour.
