I have seen a lot lately that businesses create a profile for their business on social network websites like Friendster and Multiply for marketing purposes. Ifriendster.gif personally know a friend who market himself quite good through those sites. This is not a bad idea. People on your network will receive email updates whenever you update your profile, add friends, post a shoutout, etc, without you being perceive as spammer.

But how do you do it effectively?

Here are the basic steps to get you started in marketing your business at Friendster.

  1. Create a profile with the name of your business or website. Keep it short if possible. Start and end your profile name with a single quote character (‘) (e.g. ‘Primatech Paper’, ‘GTR Car Repair’.) Why do this? A regular friendster user has at least 100 friends (connections) on its profile and sorted alphabetically. To get you on top of his/her list, you must have a special character at the beginning of your name.
  2. Write a short yet compelling “Shoutout” that includes the website URL of your business. If you think your site has too long URL, you may use the free services of TinyURL. They will basically give you a shorter URL that points to your website and you can paste it to your “Shoutout”.
  3. Upload the best pictures you have of your business. Including logo and merchandise. Think of this social network profile as your company brochure. You don’t want crappy photos of your business to be seen don’t you?
  4. Write a good marketing “About Me” in your profile. You may include your business telephone number and address.
  5. Start adding some friends. Now, you don’t want to add everybody that you see in friendster. Choose people that are in your target market.
  6. Join a Group. Again, choose appropriate group that you think has potential customers.
  7. Post on bulletin regularly.
  8. Now, to make sure more people can view your profile, go to your “Settings” and checked the continent of your target market. Then set, “Selected Continents”, for “Who can view Recent Updates on my profile“, “Who can view my full profile“, “Who can send me messages“, and “Who can leave a comment“. I think that’s the maximum exposure that you can get.

For other sites like Multiply, Facebook, and MySpace, the idea is the same. Create a business profile, build your network, and have regular updates on your profile.

This marketing tips may also work for self-employed, churches, and other organization.
