How To Market Your Business Through Social Netwok Websites

September 26th, 2007 by Jon

I have seen a lot lately that businesses create a profile for their business on social network websites like Friendster and Multiply for marketing purposes. Ifriendster.gif personally know a friend who market himself quite good through those sites. This is not a bad idea. People on your network will receive email updates whenever you update your profile, add friends, post a shoutout, etc, without you being perceive as spammer.

But how do you do it effectively?

Kudos and Questions to Mad Crowd Media

September 19th, 2007 by Jon

I really think that having this Local Ad Network will eventually awaken advertisers that online advertising is a good option to promote a product or branding. People criticizing the Mad Crowd Media (MCM) basically have the same question.

“Who will advertise to these local sites?”

That is really tough question to answer, but my bet that there will be enough. It will not come easy and may take a while, but it can be a breakthrough for all local publishers and Netrepreneurs out there where advertising is their business model.

For undecided publishers out there, I will say, let’s give this a try. I haven’t seen MCM’s contract but I feel that publishers has nothing to lose on this deal. Go give it a shot.Mad Crowd Media

For MCM, I am pretty sure they are aware on the hurdles that they need overcome to influence advertisers to spend a chunk of their advertising budget on this new medium (well, for them, online advertising is still considerably new.)

In the mind of advertisers, these are some questions that may arise and MCM must have clear answers:

  • Is this effective? How can you persuade advertisers that advertising to these local sites are effective. We are aware of ad blindness particularly on blogs and forums.
  • Pay-per-click is usually a better option for advertisers. The question is are you prepared to deal with click fraud?
  • Can I safely associate my brand to a particular blog? I noticed that most, if not all, publishers in MCM Network are blogs. Blog normally has no editors and the author will simply say what he/she feel saying. A blog post may affect the brand that my business is pushing. What if the author will write about my competitor or something that may indirectly hurt my brand?

There will be lots of brainstorming need to be done if these questions have no answers yet. Still, I believe that this effort of MCM will bring fruits and may open more opportunities to publishers and advertisers.

Keeping The Main Thing, The Main Thing

September 15th, 2007 by Jon

If there’s one thing that I’m really struggling with and holding back real success, that’s my inability to stay focus for a long period of time. I suck on this really. Yeah, I know how important it is. I realized also that this is one factor that I did not do well in school. Who would want to listen for an hour on subject that you’re not interested anyway?(good alibi for those failing marks eh?):)

As I drop to Papa Johns Pizza Restaurant, I noticed their “Core Values” posted in one side of the wall. One phrase that kicked me to get back to my senses is “Focus: We must keep The Main Thing, The Main Thing….”

Are you having the same problem as I do?

How to Build a Company Like Google

August 6th, 2007 by Jon

Ok, I know the title is an overstatement but I just recently discover the Philosophy of Google in building a website and company that will change the world. No wonder why Google is now more than a search engine but becoming a behemoth technology company.

Here is the summary of Ten Things Google Has Found To Be True.

    1. Focus on the user and all else will follow.
    2. It’s best to do one thing really, really well.
    3. Fast is better than slow.
    4. Democracy on the web works.
    5. You don’t need to be at your desk to need an answer
    6. You can make money without doing evil.
    7. There’s always more information out there.
    8. The need of information crosses all borders.
    9. You can be serious without a suit.
    10. Great just isn’t good enough.

For Netrepreneursout there, consider that 10 things as a check list in launching your next website and as Google has said it, “All Else Will Follow”.

“Make Meaning”- The Missing Link

August 2nd, 2007 by Jon

As a struggling entrepreneur, I always ask myself, What I am missing?. Why can’t I just think of a great idea that will hit big? The business idea that will bring real reward and fulfillment that I am looking for.

Guy Kawasaki, the author of a bestseller “The Art of Start” has the answer. He mentioned 5 GIST (Great Ideas For Starting Things). These are:

1. Make Meaning
2. Make Mantra
3. Get Going
4. Define your Business Model
5. Weave a MAT (Milestones, Assumptions, and Tasks)

Among the five, I should say “Making a Meaning” is the missing link from all the ventures I had in the past. Here is an excerpt from the book that defines “meaning”.

Meaning is not about money, prestige, or power. It’s not even about crating a fun place to work. Among the meanings of “meaning” are to

- Make the world a better place.
- Increase the quality of life.
- Right a terrible wrong.
- Prevent the end of something good.

Now that I am focus on Internet Entrepreneurship, this is something that I’ll put on top before launching any business or website. Kawasaki explained it convincingly well in his book and I felt more empowered ever since.

This also made me realize, Is not this life is all about? Making a meaning here in on earth and on eternal.

Know The Reasons Why Employee Hate Their Managers And Quit

July 23rd, 2007 by Jon

Do you know why employees leave the company? Even with good salary and compensation? Listen up employers and managers. Bruce L. Katcher and Adam Synder published 30 Reasons Employees Hate Their Managers – What Your People May Be Thinking and What You Can Do About It.

Being an employee and an employer myself, I will attest that these 30 reasons mentioned in the book are all true but I will only highlight some of them here.51bgxvdwnl_aa240_.jpg

In chapter 4, the title is, “Nobody Appreciates My Hard Work”. Every employee should feel appreciated in small or big things they’ve done. Who in the world doesn’t want to be appreciated anyway? In work, home, and even team play, people are looking for to be acknowledged. You wouldn’t imagine the impact to them even simple note like, “Nice design colors”, “Great job mom”, “Nice post”(for bloggers) or “That’s a nice pass” (if you’re playing basketball.) Just be careful though to sound like you’re faking it. They’ll know it too. Believe me.

“Management Doesn’t Listen To Employees”. What’s the feeling of being ignored? How can employees trust the judgment of management when their good suggestions are ignored?

“There Are Too Many Damn Meetings“. This is something I really, really, hate. Many managers thought that activity means productivity and having many meetings means clear direction. I tell you that people usually wander especially if it’s a long one.

“It’s Just Not Right that We All Receive the Same Pay”. I worked with company that the salary is based on level. If we’re on the same level means we have same pay. If you work harder and I slack most of the time, don’t you think it’s unfair? One reason why companies do this is they’re lazy to accurately measure performance.

Overall, I think lack of leadership skills is the root cause of this. There’s so many people in senior level position doesn’t know how to lead.

You Manage Things and You Lead People.

What’s your take on this?
